How to preview various file formats

What is the File Viewer?

The file viewer lets you open and view various file formats within Loom. You can quickly check file contents without needing separate applications.

Supported File Formats

Documents

  • PDF documents
  • Word documents (.docx)
  • Text files (.txt)
  • Markdown files (.md)
  • PowerPoint (.pptx) - text extraction supported, viewer coming soon
  • Korean Hangul documents (.hwp, .hwpx) - text extraction supported, viewer coming soon

Spreadsheets

  • Excel files (.xlsx, .xls)
  • CSV files

Images

  • JPEG, PNG, GIF
  • WebP, SVG

Code

  • Python, JavaScript, TypeScript
  • HTML, CSS, JSON
  • Other programming languages

Opening Files

There are several ways to open files:

From the Sidebar

  1. Expand the connected folder in the left sidebar
  2. Click the file you want to view

From AI Responses

Click file names or source links mentioned by the AI to open them.

From Search

Use the search feature to find files and click on results to open them.

PDF Viewer

  • Page navigation
  • Zoom in/out
  • Search
  • Automatic text extraction from scanned PDFs (OCR) — recognizes text even from scanner-produced or photographed documents

Spreadsheet Viewer

  • Switch between sheets
  • Resize columns/rows
  • View cell contents

Image Viewer

  • Zoom in/out
  • View at original size

Open in External App

To open a file in its default application:

  1. Click the Open Externally button at the top of the file viewer
  2. Or right-click the file and select Open with Default App

For example, Excel files open in Microsoft Excel, PDFs open in Preview.

Show in Folder

To open the folder containing the file in Finder:

  1. Click the Show in Folder button at the top of the file viewer
  2. Finder opens with the file selected
